Liberia was established by freed U.S. slaves, by the American Colonization Society, and a colony was founded at Cape Mesurado in 1821. InĀ 1822, Jehudi Ashmun became the dictator of that settlement and was Liberia’s real founder. He named the territory Liberia two years later. It’s main settlement became Monrovia. In 1847, Joseph Jenkins Roberts proclaimed Liberian independence and expanded their boundaries. Britain and France had border disputes until 1892 when boundaries for Liberia were officially established.
